An MOT for your PC

Like cars, computers benefit from regular maintenance to keep them running smoothly and safely.  There's lots you can do quickly and easily yourself, from defragmenting your hard drive to ensuring that your applications and operating system are up to date with all the latest security patches.

Similarly, the software that allows your PC to talk to the hardware is often updated by the manufacturers, often bringing real performance benefits; check their web sites regularly for new drivers.

Computer cases are magnets for dust, so try and keep them away from carpets and clothes and ensure that fans and vents are not allowed to clog up.  If your processor isn't allowed to keep cool, it can quickly overheat and die!

After a couple of years, even the most carefully maintained Windows installation can become slow and unresponsive.  This is unlikely to be down to the hardware; it's more likely that the software has become corrupted in some way.  If you kept an image of the system when you first set it up, restoring it back to a pristine condition is the work of a few minutes, otherwise, reinstalling Windows and all your applications is the only answer. Remember to back up your data files but give it a go; it'll be like having a new PC!

If you do need to upgrade, it's really quite easy to install new parts such as hard disks, RAM memory and graphics cards; give it a try, it's worth a shot!

If you do have any questions regarding servicing or upgrades, please call Calum on 07973 241413 or contact him through the website here.
